MEMPHIS MADELYN

Memphis Madelyn, born Madelyn Rose Strong in her native  hometown of Rosemark, Tenn. “Right up the road” from her Cousin, Legendary Bobby Blue Bland. Her music background was nurtured and groomed by one of the nation’s finest music genius’s, Samuel S. Spann, who was her first music teacher.   Her lifelong involvement in her church choir, Greenwood A.M.E church., Is one that she credits for her early musical interest.  As a young girl she couldn’t help but be influenced by the songs and sounds originating from  Memphis’ historic radio station, wdia.  artists  such as  Aretha Franklin, gladys knight & the pips, Stephanie mills, bobby blue bland, donny hathaway, stevie wonder & natalie cole provided a foundation for her musical interests.  As early as the age of 13 yrs., Madelyn along with her sisters, Juanita & Glenda, recorded their first record in the Larry Rodgers studio, Memphis, Tn., accompanied by the original BarKays.

Following her college years, she performed all over Southern California and with many noted musicians, such as, Clara Ward & the Ward Singers, James Cleveland, Voices of Jerusalem etc. At a point when she wanted it most, the opportunity presented itself for her to go on the road and open for one of the world’s greatest blues singers, Bobby Blue Bland.  Facing the decision of raising her girls, Stella & Donna, then 2 & 4 yrs. of age, Madelyn chose to enter the corporate arena and mother her lovely daughters.

Meanwhile, Memphis enjoyed the gifts of Madelyn, a.k.a. “Pepper” as she performed in Memphis’ nightclub scene. These venues included, Hawaiian Isle, Big M, Blues Alley, Peggy’s Patio, Club Handy, Pisceo’s and many more.
